Quebec Central Snowplow Restoration

Disassembly of the snowplow was a significant effort, with each piece removed needing to be carefully measured and documented.

The cab of the snowplow was entirely removed for restoration before reassembly.

The cab wood has been primed and reassembly begins.

Roof reassembly continues, with primed ceiling joists and roof panels being installed.

The new wood roof has been completely installed. A rubber membrane roof will be installed on top of the wood paneling.

Windows have been removed and will be restored before reinstallation.

The windows have been sanded and repainted and new glass will be installed.

Wall panels have been primed and are laid out in preparation for installation.

Inside the operators cab, volunteers have sanded the entire cab and will repaint the interior as well as restore the operator controls for display purposes.

Thanks to our dedicated volunteers, the interior has been meticulously restored. Museum visitors will be able to climb in the cab and experience what it was like to control the plow.

On the outside, volunteers began sandblasting the steel outside of the snowplow.

The snowplow has been completely sandblasted in preparation for repainting into its original Quebec Central paint scheme.

Repainting the snowplow started with spraying red paint on the plow.

After spraying the red, the plow area was masked off and the black sides were painted.

The stencils have been removed and the restoration is almost complete!

The restoration is complete and the snow plow has been on display inside the display barn. Visitors can explore inside the plow and learn about the role snowplow played in the history of railroading.

Quebec Central Snowplow #40065 has been stored awaiting restoration since it was acquired in the 1980’s. The first step of the restoration was disassembly, which can be seen here. After all the material in poor condition was removed and the snowplow disassembled, volunteers began reassembly of the historic plow. Existing wood panels that could be reused were sanded and repainted and new wood was installed where needed. The interior was completely restored, including exhibits featuring the operator controls for display and other mechanical equipment. The exterior was repainted, and the plow is now on display in the Nelson Crossing display building.
