Acquired by the museum in 1967, Southern No. 401 is one of just a handful of operating steam locomotives in America.
Mississippi Eastern 303

Type: 4-6-0 Ten Wheeler
Status: In storage; awaiting restoration
Acquired in 2000, Mississippi Eastern No. 303 has an interesting story of how it wound up at museum.
Canadian National 6789
Built: 1959
Builder: Montreal Locomotive Works
Type: FPA-4
Status: Operational
Canadian National No. 6789 spent its career pulling passenger trains in Canada. It was acquired by a museum member in 1994.
Illinois central 704
Built: 1955

Status: Inoperable; awaiting repairs
Illinois Central No. 704 was built as Long Island Railroad No. 1559 and was acquired by the museum in 1986.
Wabash 1189

Wabash No. 1189 was the last F7A built for the Wabash Railroad. Donated to the museum in 1982, it has been operating regularly on museum trains since 1992.
Milwaukee Road 1649

Milwaukee Road No. 1649 was built in 1947 and came to the museum with Mississippi Eastern No. 303 in 2000.
GREEN BAY & WESTERN 308

Green Bay & Western No. 308 is a rebuilt RS3 type diesel locomotive that operated in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Illinois before coming to the museum.
Republic Steel 191

Status: Display
Republic Steel Corporation No. 191 worked for years at a steel mill in Ohio before coming to the museum.
Lincoln Sand & Gravel 44

Type: 44 Tonner
Status: Display
Built in 1940 for the Morrell Meatpacking, this rare locomotive was one of just seven 44 Tonner type diesels built to this design.
Canadian National 6862

Canadian National No. 6862 is a rare “B” unit designed to accompany traditional locomotives like No. 6789.
Illinois Central 8733

Illinois Central No. 8733 was originally built as a GP9 type locomotive, but was later rebuilt and upgraded to GP11 specifications.

Pennsylvania No. 5764 was built in 1952 and was once used to pull the famous Broadway Limited passenger train.
Illinois terminal 784

Illinois Terminal No. 784 spent decades pulling freight trains over the Illinois Terminal Railroad and its successors and was acquired by the museum in 2020.
CANADIAN NATIONAL 102

Donated to the Monticello Railway Museum in 2023, Canadian National No. 102 once pulled the famous Zephyr trains of the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy Railroad.

Engine No. 1 was the museum's first piece of equipment and was acquired in 1966 from the Western Indiana Aggregate & Stone Company in Montezuma, Indiana.
Chicago & Illinois midland 31

Chicago & Illinois Midland No. 31 is one of only two of its type ever built. This unique engine was acquired by the museum in 2020.
Canadian national 15421

This interesting car provided steam heat to passenger trains in Canada throughout the second half of the 20th Century.
Illinois Central 6071

Illinois Central No. 6071 holds the distinction of being the first SD40 type locomotive ever built. It was donated to the museum in 2009.

This interesting piece of equipment was built using components from an older RS3 type diesel in 1977.
